The first thing to consider before buying any inkjet printer is the cost of the printer ink cartridges. The HP Photosmart D5400 ink cartridges consist of five individual colour HP ink cartridges which can cost quite a lot if your buying all five but the separate colour system means you only need to change the colour which you use the most. There are also cheaper alternatives avaible in the form of compatible HP Photosmart D5400 ink cartridges which costs considerable less then the genuine HP inks but don’t contain the same HP Photographic ink. The HP Photosmart D5400 has an impressive spec sheet when you consider that it’s a mid range photo printer with a low purchase price. Where the Photosmart D5400 impresses most is with the photo prints it produces, this is in turn thanks to its high definition print head system, which produces an impressive maximum resolution. The five-colour ink system means that the photo produces are true to life colour tones and smooth gradations. As well as being able to print professional looking photos the D5400 can also perform all the other boring things such as printing text and graphics envelopes of varies sizes, although it has to be said that it doesn’t do any of this printing particularly quickly, HP Claim it is capable of producing 30 pages per minute in draft quality mode and if it any thing like HP printers of the past then increasing the quality mode reduces the speed considerable. Cosmetically the HP Photosmart D5400 it’s brilliant either, it is quite bulky considering its only a photo printer and not a multi-function all-in-one. All its small faults however are forgiven when you see the photo prints it produces.
